Our strategic principles

Factor 3 is our formula for implementing our Sustainability Strategy: we aim to triple the value we generate in relation to the footprint of our operations, products and services by the year 2030. To achieve this and to drive sustainability through our business, we defined yet another triad of factors: products, partners and people.

1) Our Products
Millions of people around the world use our brands and technologies every day. Our products are our core business, and this is where Henkel can make the biggest difference. This is why we are strongly focused on creating more value for our customers and consumers through innovative solutions and education. Our products should deliver better performance while saving resources and lowering environmental impacts. This is an all-around approach that takes the entire business process – from the sourcing of our raw materials right up to the disposal of packaging – into account.

Example: Somat 10

With its leading 40 degrees Celsius dishwashing technology, Somat 10 ensures that even stubborn stains can be rinsed off at only 40 degrees Celsius. Compared to standard programs at 50 or 55 degrees, this can lower energy consumption by up 30 percent. In addition, Somat 10 tabs dissolve 50 percent faster than conventional ones. This makes them perform up to 20 percent better in short dishwashing programs.

2) Our Partners
Our partners – suppliers, consumers and industrial users of our brands and technologies – are key to driving sustainability along our value chains and in all areas of business and life. Accordingly, we will increase our efforts to support them with our products and expertise. This includes encouraging suppliers to lower the impacts of the raw materials we source as well as enabling customers and consumers to reduce their environmental footprint. Likewise, we work together with international initiatives and communities to decouple economic development and quality of life from using more and more resources and generating emissions.

Example: Developing New Technologies Together

Henkel employees collaborate with our customers to develop new technologies, for example for the rapidly growing renewable energy market. By sharing our adhesives expertise with the company Novatec Biosol we enabled them to develop their innovative concentrated solar thermal systems – mirrors that generate energy from sunlight. Our elastic Terostat MS adhesives proved to be an excellent high-tech solution as they can withstand extreme sunlight.

3) Our People
Our people, the Henkel employees, make the difference through their commitment, creativity, skills and knowledge. Because of them, good ideas become great business successes. They give our company its unique identity, are the interface with our customers and make change and innovation possible. We invest in the skills and knowledge of our people and encourage everyone to get engaged in the sustainability agenda, both in their daily business actions and in our communities.

Example: Schwarzkopf “Shaping Futures”

Together with the charity SOS Children’s Villages, Schwarzkopf Professional launched their initiative “Shaping Futures” in India and Peru. The aim is to teach basic techniques of professional hairdressing to young people in SOS Children’s Villages. In the long term, this should enable the participants to earn their own living. This in an excellent example of how Henkel employees use their professional know-how, in collaboration with their customers, to offer a better future to people in need of help.
